My 1969 Chrysler newport has a 383 and I'm thinking of making it louder. My question is, will that mess with the character of the car? It's a squishy land barge, not a muscle car so I hope it won't seem incongruous. Your thoughts?

Do it! Go with something like a Flowmaster 70-series, it's got the rumble, but it isn't ridiculously loud.

The whole exhaust will rust off soon enough, so the car will enlouden itself

if you don't want a car that's too brash like a musclecar, then don't make the car louder, just change the sound! If I were you I would put a nice lopey cam in the motor. Brap-brap-brap-brap

flowmasters have a lot drone to them, my 33 ford has had a set of flowmasters now for 25 years. they get annoying on the highway and cause my ears to ring for hours.
This is the newest clip I have of the truck

the original style mufflers have their own charm. I have the factory muffler on my 68 and it has its very own distinctive sound.
you could run some glasspacks. classic old school sound but not as deep tone as a flowmaster and now where near the drone.
our custom has glasspacks on it.
or you could just cut the exhaust off and run open header for NOISE!!!! our 56 has cut outs on it so you can uncork it

More than enough hood space for a viper V10
No plans in the works to procure a viper V10
Explain yourself.

The one near me has glass packs. It is gloriously loud. I recommend.

Glass packs! The largest diameter and length you can get. The type with steel wool instead of fiberglass.
